What is Alkyd Resin?

Alkyd resins are synthetic polyester resins produced through the condensation reaction between polyhydric alcohols (such as glycerol) and dibasic acids, primarily utilized in the paint industry.

Alkyd resins play a significant role in the production of paints. Particularly in today's market, alkyd resins are utilized as paint binders. BDue to their adhesive structure, alkyd resins effectively bind powdered pigments, which provide color to the paint, and filler materials that contribute to the volume and density of the paint.

The paints that enrich our lives are composed of five primary components. These components include binders, pigments, fillers, additives, and solvents.

Alkyd resins constitute a significant portion of the chemical and physical properties of paints. These resins enhance properties such as exceptional durability, gloss, color retention, and resistance to liquids and heat.

An exceptional alkyd resin (binder) yields high-quality and flawless paints.

Types of Alkyd Resins & Application Areas

Alkyd resins are categorized into three types; Short Oil, Medium Oil, and Long Oil alkyds based on the amount of fatty acids in their structure.

Short Oil Alkyd ( < 45% )

Alkyds with a fatty acid content of less than 45% are classified as Short Oil (Low) Alkyds. As the fatty acid content of alkyd resins decreases, the two chains approach each other more closely. It possesses a denser characteristic compared to other oil alkyds. The key characteristic of Short Oil Alkyds is their excellent drying times.

Areas of Application:

  • Industrial Paint,

  • Roadline Paint

  • Kerb Paint,

  • Anti-Corrosion Primers,

  • Excellent Curing Times Applications, are preferred in such areas.

Medium Oil Alkyd (45% < — > 55%)

Alkyds with a fatty acid content ranging from 45% to 55% are designated as Medium Oil Alkyds. They exhibit faster drying times and higher gloss levels compared to Long Oil Alkyd resins. They can be thinned with aliphatic solvents (such as white spirit) or more potent solvents like xylene and toluene.

Areas of Application:

  • Marine and Industrial Paints,

  • Automotive Repair Paints.

  • Glossy Paints

  • Decorative Paints, are preferred in such areas.

Long Oil Alkyd ( > 55% )

Alkyds with a fatty acid content exceeding 55% are classified as Long Oil Alkyds. The oil-based paints commonly recognized by the public are produced using Long Oil Alkyds. An increase in the fatty acid content improves the paint's brightness and strength. It can be thinned with aliphatic solvents (such as white spirit).

Areas of Application:

  • Interior & Exterior Wall Paints,

  • Corrosion-resistant paints

  • Glossy Paints

  • Air Dry Paint, are preferred in such areas.
